18 Feb CRA Moving to Online Mail for Business Correspondence in 2025
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has announced that starting in spring 2025, most business tax notices and correspondence will be delivered exclusively through My Business Account instead of traditional mail. The announcement was as follows:
“Starting in the spring of 2025, the CRA will transition to online mail as the default method of delivering most business correspondence. This means you’ll begin to receive your business tax notices and other correspondence through My Business Account. To prepare for this change, access Notification Preferences in your Profile to ensure you have a valid email address on file to receive email notifications on important tax notices and other information.”
Preparing for the Transition
To ensure you continue receiving important tax updates, business owners should:
- Check Notification Preferences in My Business Account
- Ensure a valid email address is on file
- Regularly review CRA notifications to stay informed on deadlines and compliance requirements
Key Implications for Business Owners
This shift is part of the CRA’s ongoing move toward digital communication and is likely a response to disruptions such as the Canada Post strike in November 2024.
As your advisors, Clearline CPA can assist with many tax-related matters, but there are key limitations:
- The CRA will not send notifications to CPA firms – notices are sent directly to business owners.
- We cannot update your My Business Account email or authorize representatives on your behalf.
- Business owners must regularly monitor their My Business Account to avoid missing critical notices, reassessments, or deadlines that could result in penalties and interest.
Next Steps for Business Owners
To ensure compliance and avoid missed CRA updates:
- Confirm you have access to My Business Account and My Account
- Update your email with the CRA under Notification Preferences
- Regularly review CRA messages and notices
- Contact Clearline CPA for support if you receive a CRA request or reassessment
