30 Jun A Day of Teamwork, Fun, and Growth

On May 14th, our team gathered for our Annual Professional Development Day, held at the Cascades Casino Delta Conference Centre. The day kicked off bright and early with a coffee and pastry spread, the perfect way to fuel up for the exciting sessions ahead.
Learning About Teamwork with Mike Sambrook
We were fortunate to have Mike Sambrook, a Birkman Consultant at Brackish Consulting, lead us through an engaging presentation on teamwork and communication. Mike focused on the importance of effective collaboration and had us participate in several hands-on activities to really put these lessons into practice.
The exercises were designed to push our creativity and problem-solving abilities while also highlighting the dynamics of teamwork. We were divided into smaller groups and faced challenges that required clear communication, active participation, and leadership. After each task, we reconvened in the conference room to reflect on our approach, discussing how we solved the problem, the roles that emerged within the group, and how effectively we collaborated.
This experience helped us understand how the dynamics of a team can greatly affect productivity. We also learned how office culture and the work environment play a key role in getting the best out of everyone. It became clear that, while we might think a solution is straightforward, we all approach challenges differently. With a group of 12 people, there was no shortage of diverse opinions, solutions, and perspectives, especially for one particular activity.
For those curious about that one particular activity we did, I’ll share it at the end of this article for you to try it with your office! If you’d like to know the correct answer, just shoot me an email.
A Perfect Midday Break at Cascades Casino Delta Conference Centre
After a morning full of teamwork and learning, we enjoyed a much-needed break at the Cascades Casino Delta Conference Centre, where we were treated to an incredible meal. The venue itself was the perfect setting for our event, with 5,500 sq. ft. of bright, modern space that made the entire day feel professional yet comfortable. The flexible ballroom can be transformed into three separate private spaces, perfect for hosting small executive meetings or large-scale corporate gatherings with the possibility to create breakout rooms for activities, such as we did.
Our meal was spectacular, with a delicious burger bar that included crispy fries, onion rings, and an array of toppings, including the fan-favorite truffle mayo.
Our contact at the venue, Katrina DeGrano, went above and beyond to help us, even making last-minute adjustments on the day of the event. If you’re looking for a venue that offers ample space, top-notch amenities, and excellent food, we highly recommend reaching out to Katrina at Gateway Casinos for any of your future event needs.
Getting Competitive at 6-Pack Indoor Beach
Once our bellies were full, we made our way over to 6-Pack Indoor Beach, where the real fun began. For the next two hours, we dove into the sand for friendly (yet competitive) games of volleyball, soccer, and handball.
Let me just say, if anyone had seen our partners playing sports that day, they’d be signing them as accountants on the spot! We attacked the court with the same precision, focus, and hard work that we apply to our daily work. The most competitive of all were our leaders, which was exactly the energy we needed. It was a true testament to how dedication and drive come through in every aspect of life.
Despite the intensity of the competition, we had an abundance of laughs, a great time, and some good-natured ribbing. It was a day of bonding, friendly competition, and plenty of laughs that left everyone feeling energized, happy, and motivated.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, we all walked away with more than just improved teamwork skills, we were recharged, connected, and ready to take on new challenges with fresh energy. It’s true what they say: a happy worker is a hard worker, and that’s exactly how we felt after our day of learning, teamwork, and play.
